Ancient Lycia: unforgettable tour of Turkey
So near and yet so far – Turkey is one of the most popular vacation destinations and does not seem too foreign or even mystical to Germans at first glance. But Turkey is more than the vibrant metropolis of Istanbul and popular seaside resorts. A variety of scenic and cultural treasures are waiting to be discovered by tourists.
Türkei: Ein Land voller landschaftlicher Wunder
Many of Turkey’s treasures are for the most part completely unknown in Germany. One of them is Lycia, a region in southwestern Turkey. It lies south of an imaginary line from Dalaman in the west and Antalya in the east.
In Lycia, antiquity is still alive. Especially in the small town of Fethiye, which was called Telmessos in ancient times, the long-gone times still seem to be alive. Here are imposing ruins that you would otherwise only expect to find in Greece. Another exciting destination is the ancient Myra. Leaving these two cities on the Turkish coast behind, scenic wonders await. The sinter terraces in Pamukkale in the interior of the country can be compared to nothing else: Fairytale rock formations have been created by limestone deposits of cooling hot water. The white terraces of Pamukkale are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also offer an unforgettable sight. So if you leave the popular Turkish Riviera behind, you will be rewarded.
